Google is Watching You!

Google eyeballs planted on 92% of top websites. The Register

We all knew it, Google is tracking our Internet footprints… and now it has been confirmed how easy it is for Google to do it.

A new privacy study says that Google-controlled web bugs are tracking users on 92 of the net’s top 100 sites and about 88 per cent of almost 400,000 other domains.

Three graduate students in the School of Information at the University of California, Berkeley recently examined the use of cookies, beacons, and other trackers on 393,829 distinct domains across the web, and Google trackers appeared on 348,059 of them(88%).

Google Analytics, a free product that allows online publishers to gather statistics about visitors to their sites, was used on 81 of the top 100 sites

Cookies from the advertising company DoubleClick, which is owned by Google, were present on 70 of those top 100 sites. When combining trackers from those two services, Google had a presence on 92 of the top 100 sites.

Assuming the data is accurate, it is a testimony to the widespread popularity of Google’s services like Analytics, DoubleClick and AdSense, the company’s contextual advertising network, which is used by a large percentage of Web sites small and large.

Note :

This blog uses Google Analytics + AdSense.

Team India Out of Twenty20 World Cup

June 15th, 2009

State of shock for all Indian Cricket Fans (include me on this list…), but its something we all have to live with.

Team Indias Huddle

Team India is out of Twenty20 World Cup.

If we take a relaxed look at the overall chain of events, behavior of the team, then we can infer a lot! The Team never looked threatening at all… thy seemed like a bunch of clueless-unsettled visitors.

Twenty20 is a format which is not dependent upon how well established your team is. Its more to do with your instincts, timings, natural flair and luck.

I am NO EXPERT in cricket to make comments, but I have opinions, and thats what I share here.

Few things which I feel went wrong…

- Ravinder Jadeja at No 4 in the batting line-up instead of the explosive Yuvraj Singh

This could have been avoided. You DONT trust No0Bs with such a critical match. I guess Dhoni tried stretching his luck too far. [Last time it was Joginder... probably he should have got Joginder for this match ;) ]

- Miserable batting by Captain Cool, Dhoni

You are the Captain Sir… Lead the Team! I know may be it was a bad day for you. But still I guess I expected a little more courage…

- Rohit Sharma as opener… which means we missed our Viru Bhai!

Virender Sehwag, was definitely missed. The opening has to be a blast for a successful run chase. Viru was the definite Nitro Boost which Indian Team needed in this crunch match.

- the fast-paced short ball issue

Indian batsmen are Indian batsmen! The old trick of bowlers will work against India… and it did work! Bowlers simply haunted the players Rib.

- Team Spirit

I thought the Team spirit was little low, it may be ‘coz of too much if cricket (IPL+WorldCup). I feel, they needed the extra celebration after each step of victory. Did you notice, NO TEAM HUDDLES… Atleast I did not see any Team Huddles at all! Last year and in previous tournaments, we saw Team Huddles before match, after taking wickets, after matches… but this time… it was a different story. Definitely the “togetherness”  of the Team was lost, and the reason can only be explained by the cricketers themselves.

Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose…

‘The Matrix’ : Ten Years and its still On!

June 14th, 2009

Movie, The Matrix, is possibly the most kinetic, visually stunning and mind bending movie I have ever seen. I still find it equally exciting as it was 10 years back when it was released in 1999.

Time is always against us

Yes its been 10 years…! And I am still coming to terms with this little fact.

Just finished watching this movie on Star Movies… and I realized I can still watch it for atleast 10 more times! [I am sure I have already treated myself with this Movie for atleast 15 times]

The Matrix, movie, was marketed with the question : “What is The Matrix?” and the audience got  pretty explosive answer!

Bullet time and slow motion kung fu fight scenes drew a new line on how movies were made back then. I remember with awe how stunned I was the first time I saw The Matrix in a movie theater… and even after having watched it so many time, it still facinates me.

The computer-simulated-controlled world of Matrix, was an Amazing concept, and journey by Mr Anderson, computer programmer, to being Neo was something which took almost 3 re-runs of the movie for me to understand.

The Matrix is a system, Neo. That system is our enemy.

Morpheus, Trinity or be it Tank… I guess I liked everyone in the movie.

Agent Smith is still one of the best villians! Specially the way he says “Mr Anderson”

The Matrix Clip

Today, while watching the movie, as I realized its bloody 10 year old movie, I appreciated smaller aspects of the movie.

Everything from the set design to the costumes (lots of black, lots of sunglasses) is intended to contribute to an overall look… The shots of Keanu Reeves running down a hall with guns blazing all around him and the air thick with shattered bits of concrete is only one of many snapshots that lingers in the mind’s eye long after they have vanished from the screen. The special effects, which are not as numerous as those in many science fiction pieces, are flawless.

Thats all about The Matrix.

What about Matrix-Reloaded and Matrix-Revoltions? I think they should not be discussed now… I feel the 1st part of the trilogy was the best science fiction I have seen.

10% of Twitter users generate over 90% of content

June 12th, 2009
Image representing Twitter as depicted in Crun...
Image via CrunchBase

This one is an amazing figure…. 10 per cent of Twitter users generate more than 90 per cent of the content on the micro-blogging site!

I am not cooking up these stories… this is according to a study by Harvard Business School. Also more than half of all Twitter users post messages on the site less than once every 74 days.

The study also found that unlike other social networking sites like Facebook.com, men are almost twice as likely to follow other men on Twitter than they are to follow women. Also, women are more likely to follow men than they are to follow other female users.

So what do these numbers translate into….?
Well, it simply means some bad news for Twitter. Companies are increasingly turning to Twitter to improve their understanding of how consumers view them. These numbers, now make it hard for companies to use Twitter as an accurate gauge of public opinion.

[According to recent data compiled by Nielsen Online, which measures Internet traffic, Twitter's website had more than 7 million unique visitors in February, compared to 475,000 in February 2008. I guess Twitter can run up some ads and still make money.... although I know this is not their Business Model!]

Manchester United Accept World Record Real Madrid Bid For Cristiano Ronaldo

June 11th, 2009

Great News for Real Madrid Fans…
Official Manchester United statement read, “Manchester United have received a world-record, unconditional offer of £80million for Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid.”

With a world record fee in the region of €94m agreed, it is widely expected that negotiations between the player - who asked to leave despite vowing to stay all season - will not be protracted.

Cristiano Goes to RM

Cristiano Goes to RM

Madrid has been courting for Cristiano Ronaldo for two seasons now… and finally looks like RM will have Ronaldo play for them.

It will be interesting to see Kaka and Ronaldo playing together…

I can already see ManUtd fans (specially those in India) are very angry, because they know that they were winning only because of Ronaldo’s excellent football, he might be selfish, but hey he scores goals… and now, without Ronaldo it will be difficult to defend the title!

Also, this might just be the chance for Arsenal to comeback in form and play for the title….

CRISTIANO RONALDO FACTFILE

  • 2002: Make Sporting Lisbon debut
  • 2003: Signs for Man Utd in £12m deal

Twitter : Unsecure?

June 11th, 2009

I use Twitter…  i follow 37 twitter-users… and 46 twitterers follow me…

For those who have not heard of it… Twitter.com is a key website which is being used by many individuals and even corporates!

“Microblogging” is what twitter assists you with.

building networks of contacts and sharing teeny-weeny bits of information (posts are limited to 140 characters) called microblogs

Twitter and Microblogging have become so popular that you can Google around to find articles on “How Twitter Can Help Grow Your Business”!

What we have overlooked in this process.. is the “unsecure” way the Twitter works.

1. Twitter.com still allows users to be created without an email verification

You might just discard this as a useless point… but the fact is… this allows me to create counterfeit accounts. I can anyday create an account and call myself Obama or Osama! Who’s going to verify?

Not just that… I can simply assume an identity of lets say your office colleague, follow your twits… stay in touch with you… and successfully perform my act of  Social Engineering!

What are the possibilities with Social Engineering…. click and read the Wiki.. or ask Kevin Mitnick!

2. Twitters imposes limit of 140 chars on our posts. And users send across web-links as cryptic tiny urls…

Whats the deal here???

TinyUrls like-

http://tinyurl.com/ls7hm3

and

http://tinyurl.com/dvb96

are impossible to guess, if these will take you to intended website or not. Those who read the tweets have no way of knowing where the link leads to. Only after they click it, do they know  if it links to a trusted website or links to malicious Web site, which are then used to infect the user’s computer with malware.

So just be aware…!

What you can do to be safe…

1. Dont just blindly follow anybody or allow others to follow you… Try to verify. Preferably keep it within your friends and folks whom you know.

2. Dont blindly click on Tiny Obfuscated URLs…

3. Try not to share any confidential info through Twitter…. usernames/passwords, must Never be shared!

Keeping these small things in mind can save you a lot of trouble!

[btw... I am planning to have a go at some Social Engineering exercise on Twitter... ;) ]

Recovered my old Blogs!!!

June 10th, 2009

Yes I managed it….!!! I recovered my Blogs…

recover-data

The Problem?

The problem was… I managed to “truncate” all my data which belonged to my Wordpress Blog. Now… I had no clue what is to be done. The DB would just not give me back my data, I was stupid enough not to even keep a Backup…  So how do I get back all mystuff????

How did i do it?

Pretty un-obvious thinking prevailed…. I remembered I was playing around wth RSS Feeds a year back…. and had no clue that playing around was the “golden key” to my lock!

As a testing part, I had included my blog into Google Reader… and I stumbled upon that once again… and what I see is….

ALL MY BLOGS TEXT, CONTENT AND PICS STORED RIGHT THERE

Then it was pretty simple… Ctrl-C +  Ctr-V prevailed…

BTW… If you kind of like my blog content… i suggest you subscribe to my RSS Feed in your Google Reader! Simply Add the following link : http://rajat.co.in/blog/?feed=rss2

ciao!

Hello world! [again?]

May 30th, 2009

“Welcome to WordPress. This is your first post. Edit or delete it, then start blogging!”

This is what wordpress blogs to you… when you install it on your system.

And I was made to see this once again, coz my entries for this blog “disappeared” thanks to one of my experiments. And I was foolish enough not to keep a backup.

Yes, the fact is I lost ALL my content, all my designs, all my themes… all posts in last one year…

Lesson learnt. Keep Backups… ALWAYS!

But somehow I am still smiling :)

Reason…

1. I wondered why this blog was called “Hello World” and got pretty insightful knowledge…

take this [from Wikipedia]:

the tradition of using the phrase “Hello world!” as a test message was influenced by an example program in the seminal book The C Programming Language. The example program from that book prints “hello, world” (without capital letters or exclamation mark), and was inherited from a 1974 Bell Laboratories internal memorandum by Brian Kernighan, Programming in C: A Tutorial, which contains the first known version:

 main() {
        printf("hello, world");
 }

2. I “revamped” the whole blog.

Few changes you will notice—

  • Gravatar [Yes, now I have my own Avatar!]
  • reCaptcha + MailHide [No spams! Also your email id's will be hidden from the eyes of the bad spammers]
  • Twitme [Anytime I make a post... you will get the twit on twitter]
  • Wordpress Theme [Picked the theme taken from Facebook!]
  • Share and Save Button [If you like an article, promote it, send it to your friends, or may be save it for reading again

I am still figuring out if I can get my old posts back… if you guys have some ideas… let me know…!

Till then enjoy the new looks….

ciao
